SmugMug > keywords > black white > 2009 11-15 Still no little tike. Tic toc tic toc. Day #4 overdue. Again, I have the best wife. She did some hand modelling for me today :D. Ever see a shot that makes you go "hey, I could do that"? Well, this is one of them for me. My wife's friend just brought over a set of the Twilight series, and there's a shot that's very similar to this on one of the covers. I thought it was cool, and that it was something I might be able to do. I set up a spot light that ended up being pretty low angle in the end. I made sure the spot was shining on the hands, but not the black background below. I chose an aperture that would be sharp for the apple and hands, but that I thought would leave the background a bit blurry still. I pumped up my contrast, and shot with RAW to give myself more processing options. The processing involved making selections for the apple, fingernails, and hands/arms. I tried the hands several different ways, and let my lovely wife/model choose her favorite. The final result was chalk&charcoal. I changed the apple's tint a bit to try and match the nails. I also needed to add a bit more saturation to it. Fun shot, lots of processing. It's pretty close to the original, but I turned the hands a more contrasty black & white.
